Description
No. 27 Kempton is a cottage that dates back to the early 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features a timber frame with rendered and painted brick infill, weatherboarding on the left gable end, and a reed thatch roof.
The cottage has a two-cell baffle-entry plan, with a later 17th-century addition to the left. It is one storey high with a gable-lit attic. The framing consists of large square and rectangular panels, two of which extend from the cill to the wall-plate. There is a 20th-century casement window to the left and a 19th-century casement window to the right of a roughly central boarded door, which has a part-glazed top and is sheltered by an open lean-to porch that extends from the roof. A large axial rubblestone ridge stack is located immediately to the left, featuring a dripstone and capping. There is also an infilled doorway immediately to the right of the left casement. To the left, a single-storey timber-framed addition has a hipped thatch roof and a 19th-century casement window at the front.
Inside, the timber frame remains largely intact, including the cross wall and back wall with square panels. The large stone stack has inglenook fireplaces and bread ovens on each side. The ground floor features chamfered ceiling beams and a stone winder staircase located behind the stack. The first floor includes a central collar and tie beam truss, with exposed wattle and daub infill to the left of the stack. The floors are made of wide boarded oak floorboards, and there is a door at the bottom of the staircase made from 17th-century rectangular oak panelling, which is said to have been brought from another location.
