Description

No. 17, Kempton is a late 17th-century cottage with later additions and alterations. It is timber framed with painted brick infill, roughcast to the front and gable ends, and has a machine tile roof. The cottage appears to have originally consisted of three framed bays, although the right bay may have been added later. The timber framing is exposed to the rear, featuring square panels arranged from cill to wall-plate. The front has mid-20th century casement windows; one to the left and two to the right of a mid-20th century gabled porch in the centre, with a small casement window directly above the porch. There are three mid-20th century gabled eaves dormers. The cottage has an integral end stack with a red brick shaft on the left and a red brick ridge stack on the right. A 19th-century rubblestone lean-to extends to the rear on the right. The interior, which could not be inspected at the time of the resurvey in August 1986, is said to have a substantially intact timber frame and chamfered ceiling beams to the ground-floor rooms.
