Description

The Smithy is a building that likely dates from the mid to late 19th century and has undergone minor alterations since then. It is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble, although the left gable end has been replaced with concrete blocks. The roof is slate, featuring an integral red brick stack at the right end where it meets a lower range. The building is a single storey. On the right side of the centre, there is a 19th-century cast-iron casement window with wooden shutters, and the entrance is through double doors on the left gable end.

Inside, the Smithy retains a complete set of blacksmithing equipment, including two sets of bellows, an anvil, and two forges. The room on the right has a stone floor and a central king-post truss, while the left room, which was formerly used for shoeing horses, has a boarded floor. The Smithy was still in use at the time of the last survey in August 1986.
