Description
Sweet Briar Cottage is a cottage dating from the early to mid-17th century, with later additions and alterations. It is timber framed, with rendered infill between the framing elements. The lower part of the walls is built on a high plinth of uncoursed limestone rubble, which continues rendered to the left gable end, and is made of painted concrete blocks on the right. The roof is slate covered.
The cottage originally comprised two main rooms. It is a single storey with an attic. The timber framing is characterized by irregular square and rectangular panels, two and three timbers from the cill to the wall-plate on the right-hand side, with short straight tension braces. A queen-strut truss supports the right gable end. Modern casement windows are present on the left and right sides, as well as a gabled eaves dormer window on the left side. There is a modern open gabled porch with a glazed door leading to the entrance on the right gable end. A 19th-century brick end stack is located on the left side.
Inside, the left ground-floor room retains a chamfered spine beam and a large stone inglenook fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel. The room also features a timber-framed cross wall. A section of the back wall was removed in the late 20th century to create access to a wide gabled addition which is not considered to be of special architectural interest.
