Description
Nos. 20 and 21 Kempton is a farmhouse that has been divided into two cottages. It dates from the early to mid-17th century and has undergone later additions and alterations. The structure is timber-framed with painted brick infill, and the front gable and long wall of No. 21 are roughcast. The roof is covered with machine tiles.
The building has an L-plan layout, consisting of a two-bay hall range with a slightly shorter cross-wing that projects to the north. It stands two storeys tall. The timber framing features square panels, with three panels extending from the cill to the wall-plate. The rear gable has a collar and tie-beam truss with V-struts from the collar and projecting double-purlin ends.
On the front gable, there are 19th and 20th-century metal casements, with two on each floor, including a French window to the right. The cross-wing to the right has 19th-century casements in the centre and to the right, and a 20th-century casement located immediately below the eaves to the left. There is an integral red brick end stack on the front gable, while the rear walls of the hall range and cross-wing feature prominent external lateral rubblestone stacks topped with late 20th-century red brick.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. There is a 20th-century flat-roofed extension at the rear, which is not considered to have special architectural interest.
