Description
Nos. 3 and 4 Church Road is a farmhouse that was later converted into two cottages and is now a house. It dates from the early 17th century and was remodeled in the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick, which is painted on the front and right gable end, encasing a timber frame, and features a slate roof.
On the left side, one bay of the original timber-framed house remains, while the rest was demolished and a second bay was added to the right in the 18th century. At that time, the timber-framed section was covered with brick and had stone facing on the internal walls. The house is two stories high with a floor band and has three late 19th-century casement windows directly below the eaves, with similar windows on either side of the off-centre entrance. There is a late 20th-century casement window immediately to the left of the entrance, which features a contemporary flat hood above a nail-studded door. The building has integral end stacks.
Inside, there are three deep-chamfered cross beams on the ground floor, and some fragments of the timber frame are exposed on the first floor. It is said that there is a cruck truss in the left gable end, although this was not observed during the last survey in January 1986. A late 20th-century two-storey addition at the rear is not considered to have special architectural interest.
