Description

Nos. 4 and 5 in Totterton is a farmhouse that has been converted into two cottages, now functioning as a single residence. It dates from the early to late 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid to late 19th century. The building is timber framed, featuring rendered infill panels, a coursed limestone rubble gable-end wall on the left, a high plinth on the right, and roughcast at the rear, all topped by a graded slate roof.

The framing consists of square panels, with four extending up to the wall plate, short corner braces on the left, and long tension braces on the right. The structure is L-shaped, comprising three framed bays, and has one and two storeys, with a half-basement on the right and a gable-lit attic. There is an integral 19th-century brick end stack on the left and a ridge stack on the wing to the right at the rear.

On the first floor, there is a 19th-century metal cross window to the left and a two-light 19th-century casement window off-centre to the right. The ground floor features a 19th-century metal cross window to the left and a 19th-century wooden mullioned and transomed window to the right. A 20th-century gabled porch with planted timbers leads to a door with four flush panels, the top two of which are glazed, and there is a boarded basement door to the right. Additionally, there is a 20th-century one-storey lean-to on the left, constructed of white-painted brick with a boarded door.
