Description

Red House Farmhouse, shown on the Ordnance Survey map as Red House, is a farmhouse dating from the mid to late 17th century. It is built of red brick in English and English garden wall bonds, topped with a mid 19th century slate roof. The building has a U-plan layout with a central staircase wing that projects to the rear. It features a basement, two storeys, and an attic. The exterior includes a plinth, plat bands, and exposed wall plate and joist ends below the eaves. There is a central gabled dormer with a two-light casement and large external end stacks with twin square shafts. The left stack reduces in width and has a plain tile pentice roof that extends to the front. The façade has a 1:3:1 bay rhythm with projecting gabled wings. The 19th century wooden cross windows have recessed segmental tympana, with a blind window in the centre on the first floor. The wings contain two-light attic casements, and some 20th century casements have been inserted in the basement. A large 20th century flight of concrete steps leads to the central boarded door, which is framed by a mid 19th century doorcase featuring panelled pilasters and a bracketed triangular pedimented hood. There are boarded basement doors to the left and in the right-hand return front. At the rear, there is a 20th century flat-topped eaves dormer to the left, and the central projecting gabled staircase wing has plat bands and 19th century wooden cross windows. Inside, there is a dog-leg staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and a square newel post. The interior also features chamfered and stopped beams, boarded doors, and a pump and kitchen range in the cellar.
