Description

No. 1 Portman Park is a cottage dating from the early to mid 18th century. It has been refenestrated in a traditional style and extended in the 20th century. The original structure is timber-framed, covered in weatherboarding, and sits on a brick plinth with a tiled roof that features a catslide at the rear. There is an external chimneystack made of English bond brickwork with some grey headers. The cottage is two storeys high and has two windows, following a two-bay end chimneystack design.

The front of the cottage has two 20th-century metal leaded light windows and an original ledged plank door with pintle hinges, which is sheltered by a 20th-century weatherboarded porch with a penticed tiled roof. The left side elevation includes a small leaded light window near the top of the gable and a 20th-century lean-to extension. The rear elevation features a 20th-century casement window on each floor and a small 20th-century extension.

Inside, there is a right-side open fireplace with a wooden bressumer and English bond brickwork. The ceiling joists are visible on the left side but are concealed under a plastered ceiling on the right. The former central partition wall on the ground floor has been removed. The outshot retains some original roof timbers and has an original ledged plank door with pintle hinges. Another similar door leads to the half winder staircase. On the upper floor, the timber frame is visible, including the midrail and corner and intermediate posts with a typical mid-18th century profile. There is a partition wall between the two upper rooms, which also features an original ledged plank door with pintle hinges and original floorboards. Diagonal tension braces are visible in the roof.
