Description
This building, originally a single house and now divided into two shops, is located at 23 The Square in Beaminster. It dates from the 17th century but underwent significant alterations in the 18th century. The structure features lias rubble walls and an ashlar stone eaves-cornice, topped with a slate roof that has stone gable-copings. There is one brick chimney stack on the left gable. The building is two storeys high with attics and has a total of three windows.
The chemist's shop has a canted bay window with three large panels divided by wooden sections, while the grocer's shop features rounded bay windows with glazing-bars. Both shops have separate friezes but share a continuous moulded wooden cornice above. The front door to the grocer's shop is wooden with six glass panels, and the chemist's shop has a two-leaf wooden door with flush and recessed panels. A wooden canopy with a pediment and dentil cornice is supported by bracketed supports. The Beaminster Pharmacy was established in 1790 by Richard Hine.
