Description

This is a late 18th and 19th century house and shop located on the west side of Addington Street, Ramsgate. The main construction dates from 1801-1821, with a significant alteration to the shop front in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of stock brick with a slate roof. It is three storeys high with a basement. A string course runs along the first floor, and a parapet with stacks is present on the left and right sides. The second floor has four segmentally headed sash windows with glazing bars. The first floor features two canted bays with sash windows and cornices. The shop front on the left (number 37) is from the late 19th century, with bays supported by simple pillars, glazing bars, recessed half-glazed double doors centrally, and a panelled door to the right with a rectangular fanlight. Basement grills are visible within the shop bays. A fine late 19th century chemist's shop front is located on the right, with Art Nouveau detailing, including a double canted bay, heart-shaped brackets to the fascia, a glazed tile base, a central recessed half-glazed door with matching Art Nouveau tracery to the windows, and a painted contemporary sign on the fascia. A boarded door with a rectangular fanlight is located on the left. The building is depicted on Collard and Hurst's 1821 plan of Ramsgate.
