Description

49 Addington Street is a house and shop that dates from the early 18th century or earlier, with alterations made between 1801 and 1821, as well as changes in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick and flint, with the front elevation rendered and a plain tiled roof. It has two storeys and a basement, topped with a hipped roof that features a parapet and stacks at the rear.

On the first floor, there is a canted bay oriel window, while the ground floor has a later 19th-century shop front with canted plate glass, a traceried basement opening below, and a plate glass door to the right, all under a cornice fascia supported by pilasters. The mouldings of the shop front reflect influences from the late 19th-century Arts and Crafts style.

Inside, the cellar is lined with red brick in English and irregular bond, along with flint and large dressed stone blocks. There are remnants of a stair with turned newels and a winder plan. The interior also features 19th-century beaded boarded panelling with moulded skirting and cornice, and a queen strut roof.

This building is the only substantial remnant of the farming and fishing hamlet that existed on this site before the development of Addington Street by James Townley after 1801, along with the nearby Cavalry Barracks. The basement contains remains that may be from late medieval structures.
