Description

This is a terrace of houses numbered 14 to 29 inclusive, with associated railed areas, built in the 1830s as part of James Townley's redevelopment of the area previously occupied by Napoleonic barracks in Ramsgate. The terrace is constructed of stock brick, some of which has been painted, with slate roofs. It extends to three storeys and includes a basement at numbers 23 and 25. The facades feature rusticated bases, a string course, a parapet, and a series of stacks arranged from left to right. Each house unit originally had two windows per floor, though number 14 has a single window bay and shares an entrance with number 15 (the right-end house, number 31). The windows are largely glazing bar sashes, although some have been replaced with cross windows (number 18) and sashes (numbers 19, 20, 21). The first floor has full-height glazing bar sashes, some of which have been replaced with French doors and casement windows. A tented verandah runs along the first floor, supported by slender piers and featuring louvred valancing and consistently patterned geometric iron rails. The ironwork is varied, and number 29 has a glazed-in verandah. Bow windows are present on the ground floor, with glazing bar sashes and, in many cases, accompanying Ionic pilasters. The front doors are located to the left of the bow windows and consist of seven moulded raised and fielded panels with a semi-circular fanlight within a gauged surround; numbers 14 and 15 share a common door, approached by a flight of five steps. Basement windows are glazing bar sashes and include half-glazed doors. Fleur-de-lys detailing is incorporated into the ironwork on the steps and basement areas.
