Description

12 and 13 Abbeygate is a shop with two flats above, built in the mid-19th century. The building features white brick construction and a slate roof with a parapet and a moulded brick cornice. It has four storeys and a cellar, with a four-window range of sashes that have clear glass set in plain deep reveals. These windows are topped with gauged brick segmental arches, moulded stone keystones, and sills supported on stub brackets.

Notably, in the centre of the first storey, there is a moulded console bracket that supports a stone pestle and mortar, indicating that this location served as a chemist's shop for many years. The shop front is adorned with a dentil frieze and cornice. At the east end of the building, a recessed door with ornate Jacobean-style panels and a semicircular roll-moulded surround provides access to the upper storeys.

Inside, the cellar is primarily lined with 19th-century brick and features reused timber beams in the ceiling. The party wall on the east side is mainly constructed of limestone blocks arranged in a random pattern.
