Description

No. 44A Abbeygate Street, including Nos. 1 and 1A Hatter Street, is a late 1880s office building located in Bury St Edmunds. It is constructed of red brick and features a parapet with a moulded brick modillion cornice, showcasing an ornate Renaissance style.

The building is primarily two storeys with a basement, situated on a corner site with a long frontage on Hatter Street, which was originally the main façade. It has three windows facing Abbeygate Street and ten windows on Hatter Street, all of which are sash windows without glazing bars. The top storey windows are semicircular headed, adorned with moulded brick arches and keystones, and there is a moulded brick band at the impost level.

On the Hatter Street side, the four southern first storey windows are shorter than the others, with a row of windows positioned below them. The ground-storey windows feature moulded brick shouldered architraves and sills. A broad band runs beneath the upper windows, complete with a moulded brick cornice and shaped aprons under each window. A high moulded brick plinth is present at sill level, and on the Abbeygate Street side, two high basement openings rise above the sill level, equipped with segmental-arched brick heads and pierced cast-iron grilles. One of the ground-storey windows has been converted into a doorway, while the original doorway, complete with a fanlight, is set back in a semicircular brick arched opening on the Hatter Street frontage.
