Description

46 Abbeygate Street is a building in Bury St Edmunds that consists of two shops with an office above, originally a house and shop. It dates from the 17th century, with later alterations. The structure is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a 20th-century plaintiled roof. It has three storeys, with two windows on each of the upper levels. All windows are sashes featuring vertical glazing bars in cased frames, and those on the first storey have diminished side-lights. The shop fronts were updated in the 20th century. Inside, the front range includes one 17th-century chamfered and stopped main beam on the upper storey, and there are signs that an earlier roof with a double gable faced the street. If this is the case, the current top storey is an early 19th-century addition.
