Description

Barclays Bank is a bank building located on Abbeygate Street in Bury St Edmunds. It was constructed in the 19th century in two phases. The eastern half was built for Gurneys in 1856 by architect H.F. Bacon of Bury and served as their bank until 1880. The western half was designed in a matching style by J.B. Pearce of Norwich and completed for Gurneys in the same year. The older part functioned as a Post Office from 1881 to 1895, after which the entire building was taken over by Barclays.

The building is faced with stucco and features a moulded parapet, a modillion cornice, and an egg-and-dart frieze, topped with a slate roof. It has three storeys and cellars, with a nine-window range arranged as 1:3:1:3:1, where the end and centre bays project slightly. The ground storey has sash windows without glazing bars, while the first and second storey windows have single vertical bars, except for the four first storey windows on the west side. The second storey windows are adorned with stucco architraves and sills on stub brackets. The first storey windows feature stucco architraves, balustrades beneath the sills, and segmental pediments on enriched console brackets. The ground storey windows have stilted arches with architraves and keystones, along with panelled pilasters and panels below the sills. The projecting bays include doorways, two of which have round-headed arches with coursed stucco rustication, and one on the left has a Tuscan porch. A continuous dentil cornice runs above the ground storey windows.
