Description

Nos. 16 and 16A Abbeygate Street in Bury St Edmunds are offices of the Trustee Savings Bank, originally built as a house and shop around 1863. The building was designed by William Spanton, a photographer, for his own use. No. 16A serves as the Area Office of the TSB and occupies the upper floors of both No. 16 and No. 17.

The building is constructed of white brick and slate and stands four storeys tall, making it the highest building on the street. It features a stucco cornice and moulded rusticated quoins. The top storey has three sash windows with vertical glazing bars and stucco shouldered architraves, along with a raised band at sill level. The second storey also has three sash windows, this time with single vertical glazing bars, shouldered architraves, and cornices. The first storey is stuccoed and has three sash windows with moulded architraves and segmental pediments on console brackets. The ground storey has a plain 20th-century shop front.

Inside, there is an original steep winder stair located in the north-east corner of No. 16, which runs the full height of the building. This stair features bracketed open strings, slender column balusters, and a wreathed handrail.
