Description

17 Abbeygate Street is a former house and printing office that has been converted into a shop on the ground floor, with part of the Trustee Savings Bank offices located above. The building has a core dating back to the 15th century, with a front that was added in the early 19th century. It features a timber frame that is rendered, topped by a plain tiled roof with a paired wooden modillion eaves cornice.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a cellar. Each of the upper storeys has three small-paned sash windows set in flush cased frames, with a raised band beneath the second storey windows. The ground storey has an early 20th-century double shop front, which includes a fascia supported by enriched console brackets. Access to the offices above is provided by a six-panel side door that has sunk panels and moulded surrounds.

The interior has been modernised, but during significant renovations in the 1980s, heavy floor joists and good framing along the rear wall were revealed.
