Description
27 and 28 Market Place is a house that was later converted into a shop and is now used as offices. It has undergone alterations from the 15th century, 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century. The exterior features a roughcast front with a timber frame and a plain tiled roof, which has coped gables behind a tall parapet and two reduced gable stacks.
The building is two storeys high with a three-bay front. On the ground floor, there is a late 18th-century shop front that was altered in the 19th century. This shop front includes a central glazed door with an overlight, a bowed shop window with glazing bars on the right, and a 19th-century replaced window on the left that is louvred. To the right, there is a doorway with an architrave featuring roundels and a bordered overlight. All these elements are framed by narrow pilasters and have carved brackets supporting a frieze and a dentilled cornice. The first floor has three plain sash windows.
Inside, the building originally had a jettied front from the 15th century, and the ground floor posts that supported this jetty still survive, although they are now cased in. The first-floor wall is timber-framed but is covered over. The roof features 15th-century king post trusses and rafters that remain intact.
