Description

29 Market Place, Boston is a red brick building with tiled roofs, dating from the early to mid-18th century. The building comprises a three-storey front range facing north-south, and a two-storey back wing extending to the south, with its roof running east-west.

The symmetrical west front features two twelve-paned sash windows to the first and second floors, above a modern shop front which originally had panelled pilasters and a fascia, now largely obscured by modern signage, with plate glass windows flanking double doors. The south elevation fronts onto Craythorne Lane. The gable end of the front range is blank. The back wing has four regularly spaced twelve-paned sash windows on its first floor, and four boarded openings with segmental arches on the ground floor.

Internally, the building has been largely modernised. A notable feature is an early to mid-18th century dogleg staircase connecting the second and third floors, which includes turned balusters and a plain square newel post. The back wing retains a collar rafter roof, although the current collars are replacements. In the front range, an additional length of timber has been fixed to a tie beam, likely to support a wider roof span.
