Description
32 and 33 Market Place is a pair of houses that have been converted into offices. They were built in 1777 and altered in the 19th century. The buildings are constructed of red and brown brick in Flemish bond, with some areas rendered and painted, and feature painted stone dressings. The hipped roof is made of Westmorland slate with lead dressings.
The exterior consists of three storeys plus a cellar, with a six-bay front arranged in a 3:3 pattern. There is a plinth, a band at the second floor, and a cornice with modillions at the eaves. The ground floor has a 19th-century bank front with a five-bay arcade, which contains plain sashes set within moulded semicircular arches, each featuring a triple keystone, and broad brick pilasters between the arches. The leftmost window was originally a doorway. Below the four other windows, there are blocked cellar openings with arched tops that also have keystones. To the right, there is a tripartite sash window with plain pilasters, alongside a panelled door with a fanlight, which has a plain pilastered surround and panelled reveals. An entablature runs the full length of the building, with paired console brackets over the end door positions. The first floor features six full-height glazing bar sashes, while the second floor has six smaller sashes of a similar style. The window openings have painted flat wedge brick arches, and the gable end is rendered. The date 1777 is inscribed on the rainwater head. The interior has not been inspected.
