Description
The Customs House is a custom house that has been converted into offices. It was built in 1725 and altered in the early 19th century and the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with stone bands, rusticated quoins, and a blue brick plinth topped with a chamfered stone. It features stone-coped gables and two gable stacks, with a plain tile roof.
The exterior has two storeys plus attics and a three-bay front with a plinth, first and second-floor bands, and a rebuilt parapet with moulded stone coping. On the left side, there is a panelled door framed by a doorcase with fluted pilasters, a plain frieze, and a cornice. Above the door is a painted timber Royal Arms. To the right, there are two glazing bar sash windows, and three similar windows on the first floor, all featuring segmental brick heads with keystones. The roof includes three glazing bar sash dormers with segmental head roofs.
Inside, some 18th-century joinery remains. Additionally, in the rear yard, there are further remains of a vaulted undercroft associated with No. 10 South Street, which is part of the former Dominican Friary founded in the late 13th century.
