Description
This building, located at 20 and 22 South Street and including 1 Spain Lane, is a pair of houses that have been converted into a shop. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The exterior features painted brick and some render, topped with a plain tiled roof that has a coped gable on the left side.
The building is two storeys high with a four-bay front arranged in a 2:2 pattern. The left side of the ground floor has rusticated stucco quoins, and there is a moulded wooden eaves cornice. The ground floor has two 19th-century shop fronts with narrow pilasters, a fascia, and a cornice; the left shop front has four lights, while the right has three. Above these are two 20th-century nameboards. The upper floor has four glazing bar openings, with fixed lights on the left and sash windows on the right. The gable end features a 19th-century glazed doorway and a canted bay shop window, with a glazing bar fixed light above that has a segmental head.
At the rear, facing Spain Lane, there is a lower range that includes a first-floor band. To the right, there is a blocked doorway, and to the left, a tripartite glazing bar sash window with a segmental head and shutters. Further left is a small access doorway, and above this is another tripartite sash window and a glazing bar sash window to the right.
Inside, the building retains a turned baluster stair.
