Description
50 and 51 Market Place are two houses that have been converted into a shop. They date from the early 18th century and early 19th century, with some later alterations. The front facade is finished in stucco with painted stone dressings, while the rear is constructed of red brick, topped with pantile and concrete tile roofs. The building stands three storeys high and features a three-bay front facade from the early 19th century, with an early 18th-century range at the back.
The main front includes an early 20th-century shop front that spans the entire width of the ground floor. Above the central bay, there is a semi-circular headed recess that extends through two floors, with a sill band of second-floor windows that serves as an impost band. The first floor features semi-circular headed 12-pane sash windows with radial glazing in the heads, flanking a central, pedimented tripartite window that has a 12-pane sash in the middle and 4-pane sashes on either side. This section is topped with a moulded cornice and a central pediment. Above, there are three 6-pane sashes, along with a moulded eaves band, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice with a blocking course.
The rear range has a side elevation facing the alley, with a rendered ground floor. The first floor features a 3-light timber cross mullion window, with a similar window above, both set below segmental brick arches. The roof has dentilled eaves and a large central ridge stack, with a steeply pitched concrete tiled roof that has stone copings. The gable end contains two first-floor sashes and two blocked second-floor openings, all beneath segmental arches.
