Description

Barclays Bank, located at No 3 High Street in Doncaster, was built in 1882 by Fredrick Williams Masters. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with red brick at the rear and has a hidden roof. It stands three storeys tall and features six bays, with the end bays slightly projecting above the ground floor.

The ground floor has a plinth and the end bays include steps leading to panelled doors with plain fanlights, all set beneath keyed archivolts on moulded imposts, within large pedimented doorcases. These doorcases are adorned with pilasters featuring fluted panels on deep bases with vermiculated designs, which support fluted consoles topped with swags and cornices. Above these, panelled dosserets and open pediments are present, with a plain keyed frieze between them. The central four bays contain plate-glass sashes with moulded sills over panelled aprons, separated by rusticated pilasters that alternate with vermiculated panels. An entablature with a moulded cornice runs above.

On the first floor, there are six plate-glass sashes set over raised aprons with a continuous moulded sill, framed in eared architraves topped with pediments. The two central windows feature segmental pediments, while the flanking windows have triangular pediments, and the outer bays are topped with scrolled broken pediments. The second floor has smaller sashes on a continuous moulded sill, with projecting bracketed sills. These windows are also in eared architraves with scrolled tops, and there is an entablature above with a blocking course and a central raised panel flanked by scrolls. The building has end stacks made of ashlar.

Inside, the original banking hall retains a grid beamed ceiling with dentilled and bracketed cornices. This building was originally constructed for the Yorkshire Savings Bank.
