Description
54 and 55 Market Place is a pair of houses that have been converted into a shop and offices. They date from the mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of brown brick with stone detailing and feature a graduated slate roof. They stand three storeys high and have five bays, with a central bay that is slightly advanced and topped with a pediment.
The ground floor has a modern arched brick shop front. On the first floor, there is an ashlar sill band and five tall 12-pane sash windows set in moulded architraves. The central window is positioned below a pulvinated frieze and a consoled cornice, all set within a semi-circular headed brick recess. Above, there are five 6-pane sash windows in similar architraves, each with projecting sills. The building is finished with an ogee bracketed moulded cornice and a pediment, and there are no chimney stacks present.
