Description

The Ship Tavern is a two-storey public house built in the 18th century, featuring an L-shaped plan. Constructed of brown brick in English bond with red brick dressings, it has a slate roof. The front elevation has a central entrance with a pedimented doorcase and slender rounded pilasters, leading to a late-20th-century door flanked by tripartite windows with modern glazing bar sashes. Above the entrance, there is a blocked narrower window opening, and the upper floor has two matching windows, all set beneath broad red-brick segmental-arched heads. The east gable includes an attic window with a three-over-three pane sash frame. The rear wing has two large and one small window openings with undivided sash frames, while the front range features ridge chimneys on each gable.

Inside, the public house has been remodelled to create an open-plan layout, with a central late-20th-century bar counter and back bar. The front section retains hearths on both end walls and includes a central entrance lobby with rear access passages to the toilets. Access to the cellar is provided through a floor hatch in the bar area, with wooden steps leading down. The cellar has low, flat ceilings, some areas supported by modern wooden joists. The front section also features late-20th-century fixed upholstered benches at both ends.
