Description

Blackfriars Arts Centre is a refectory range of a Dominican Friary, now serving as an arts centre. The building underwent significant restoration and alteration in 1963. It is constructed from coursed and squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring a 20th-century plain tiled roof and a 20th-century wirecut brick gable end to the east.

The exterior is two storeys high with an irregular seven-bay front, which includes a moulded string course and a 20th-century chamfered stone cornice. Beneath the string course, there are five projecting chamfered stone corbels. To the right, there is a broad arched opening containing recessed contemporary entrance doors. On the left, there are two small round openings that are visible in an 18th-century print of the building, along with a blocked opening between them. Further left are two 14th-century pointed openings with chamfered surrounds, situated between a taller segmental-headed opening that features recessed blocking. The first floor has four restored two-light openings with pointed stone heads and chamfered mullions, as well as three two-light timber casements with timber lintels. All windows are adorned with lead cames. The eastern gable has been rebuilt and features casement windows dating from 1963.

Inside, the building retains two plain low stone arches and a repositioned 17th-century stair with large turned balusters, panelled newels topped with ball finials, and moulded handrails.
