Description
No. 24 Market Place is a former shop now used as offices, with origins dating back to the 15th century. The building has undergone alterations in the late 18th century, late 19th century, and 20th century. It features a rendered and stucco exterior, a slate roof, and a single stack located behind the parapet.
The building stands three storeys high with a three-bay front that includes sill bands, a moulded dentilled cornice, and a balustraded parapet. The ground floor has a late 19th-century shop front, complete with pilasters and brackets supporting a moulded angled fascia. On the first floor, there are three plain sash windows with moulded surrounds and small panels below. The second floor also has three small sash windows, which feature moulded surrounds on tabs. At the rear, along Grants Lane, there are doors and windows that belonged to small corn trading offices used in the 19th century in conjunction with the market.
Inside, the building retains remnants of earlier 15th-century timber-framed walls. Historically, the corn market was held in front of the nearby Peacock Hotel, which is now occupied by Boots the Chemist.
