Description
No. 15 Abbeygate is a shop with storage above, originally a house and shop, located on a corner site in Bury St Edmunds. It dates from the late 15th century to early 16th century, with an extension added around 1600. The building is timber-framed and rendered, featuring a jettied design along the side frontage, with the ends of the joists exposed; it was also previously jettied along the front. The roof is covered with plain tiles from the 20th century.
The exterior consists of two storeys and attics, with the front range divided into two bays and a long return front facing High Baxter Street. There are three sash windows with a single vertical bar to the lights on Abbeygate Street. The building has a parapet and a wooden modillion cornice, and two flat-headed dormers with sash windows that have vertical glazing bars. The ground storey features a late 20th-century shop front. The later rear range includes a row of eight linked small-paned sash windows and two paired sash windows on the upper storey.
Inside, there is little visible due to restoration work. A dragon-beam was uncovered in the front range during restoration around 1980, and part of the tie-beam of the central truss is exposed on the upper storey, supported by a heavy brace. The rear range has 19th-century roof trusses.
