Springhead

Springhead is a house, a pair of attached cottages, and an attached mill house at a right angle, now serving as a house and rural resource centre. The house appears to date from the late 18th century, while the cottages and mill are from the early 19th century. A linking range between the house and mill was added in the early 20th century. The mill was built by Samuel Bishop. The building features whitewashed brick walls, with thatched roofs on the house and cottages, and a half-hipped tiled roof on the mill. There are brick stacks at the ends of the original range and partway along the roofs of the cottages.

The house is two storeys tall, the cottages are one and a half storeys, and the mill has two storeys and attics. The original range is symmetrical with three bays. It has 2-light casements with leaded lights, with those on the ground floor set under stone lintels with keystones. The door was probably originally central but is now located in a later addition to the right. The cottages have a five-window range with a saw-tooth brick band below the dormers. The ground floor features 2-light casements under segmental heads, while the dormers likely had original 3-light casements with leaded lights. There are 20th-century glazed doors to the left and near the centre. The mill has irregular fenestration with casements that include glazing bars. The right gable wall features a 20th-century canted bay.

After its closure as a mill in 1881, the building was used as a factory for making bottle-stopping machines and for cheese manufacture. In the 20th century, Springhead became the home of Rolf Gardiner, whose pioneering work in ecological conservation, organic farming, and environmental philosophy continues through the Springhead Trust.
