Description

This is a millmaster’s house, now divided into two separate residences (numbers 5 and 6), and an attached row of four cottages that now form three dwellings (numbers 2, 3, and 4). The building dates to the early 19th century and is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The house, situated to the left of the row, features a front-facing gable. It has two bays of tall 12-pane sash windows; those on the second floor have arched heads and Gothic glazing. A coped gable with a ridge stack is present. The rear of the house features a two-storey lean-to addition and an arched window flanked by a blind lunette to the second floor of the gable, which is coped with a stack. The left-hand return facade has five bays of sash windows to the ground floor and first floor, with blind lunettes to the second floor, except for the window in the third bay which has Gothic glazing. A doorway with an overlight is set within the third bay. Two lateral stacks are visible. The right-hand return exhibits similar fenestration, also with two lateral stacks. The attached cottages to the right are single-cell and double-depth. Each cottage has a doorway with tie-stone jambs and a three-light flat-faced mullioned window with slightly recessed mullions on each floor. Three ridge stacks are present. The rear of number 2 has a two-light window, with the lintel bearing the faded inscription “DIRY”. The building exemplifies a large millmaster’s house alongside the simpler dwellings of his employees, situated immediately adjacent to the mill.
