Description
Ravenroyd is a house dating from the early to mid-17th century, with an early 20th-century extension. It is constructed of well-coursed grit-stone and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and a two-cell layout, with a dairy located at the rear of the first cell and a direct-entry plan.
The first cell includes a four-light double-chamfered mullioned window, along with a four-light window above that has arched lights and sunken spandrels. The doorway features composite jambs with a Tudor-arched lintel, chamfered surround, and carved spandrels. The second cell has a six-light mullioned-and-transomed window, with a five-light window with arched lights above it. Notably, there are three projecting rainwater spouts and corbels supporting a stone gutter above this window, which is an unusual feature. A continuous string-course runs above the ground-floor windows. The extension on the right has a lateral stack, while there are two additional stacks on the left gable.
Inside, the house has two large spine beams with broad chamfers and ogee-stops. Ravenroyd was once the local centre of Quakerism.
