Description
The Library at Sherborne School, dating from around the 13th century, likely incorporates Saxon remains from the north-west transepts of the Abbey at its southern end. This two-storey building originally included a cellarer's range below and an Abbey Guest Hall above, featuring a 15th-century roof. The east face is divided into eight bays by wall shafts from the late 14th century cloister. Notable medieval features include a staircase at the south-east angle, a 13th-century one-light window, six 15th-century windows, and part of the open timber roof. The school acquired the building in 1851, and it has undergone many alterations since then. The Library is part of a group of buildings surrounding the greens immediately to the north of the Abbey Church of St Mary, forming a cohesive ensemble with the church itself.
