Second War Memorial At Sherborne School

The Second War Memorial at Sherborne School, built between 1955 and 1956, features a cruciform plan and is constructed from pale ashlar with a stone slate roof. The south-west front facing Abbey Road has a tall, wide gable with coping and a finial, showcasing three layers of windows. High in the gable end is a 2-light window with a dripmould, below which is a large 5-light, 3-tier window also with a dripmould, and just above ground level, there are three small 3-light windows. The building includes buttresses for support.

On the south-east front, there is a wider projecting gable that connects at ground level to a cloister wing to the south, featuring a 7-light, 2-tier window above. The north-east front has a fall gable flanked by buttresses and offsets. A double flight of steps with a ramped handrail leads to a half-landing with balustrading, continuing in a single flight to the entrance. This entrance has a round-headed doorway, flanked by buttresses and topped with a plain entablature. Above the doorway is a 5-light, 3-tier window with a dripmould, and a small 2-light window with a dripmould above that. On the ground floor to the north, there is a rectangular doorway with a dripmould, surmounted by a parapet with stringcourses.

The memorial is situated among other buildings of Sherborne School, surrounding the greens immediately to the north of the Abbey Church of St Mary, and it forms a group with these buildings and the Abbey Church itself.
