Description

The School House Studies at Sherborne School is an L-shaped wing with origins dating back to the 15th century, which has been restored by R C Carpenter. It includes the former Abbey kitchen, featuring a projecting chimney at the north end of the north-south wing. This chimney incorporates four cusped panels with carvings of the symbols of the Evangelists.

On the west end of the north face, there is a large gabled bay with an original doorway that has two small niches above, flanked by small buttresses. Above the doorway is a late medieval four-light, two-tier window with four-centred heads. In the east part of the gable, there is a splayed bay with a moulded cornice and gargoyles, along with windows that have one or two cinquefoiled lights with labels. To the east of this, and to the west of the chimney wing, the lower windows are transomed.

The chimney wing projects north at the east end and has two window bays in the west wall, which also features a gable above. The east face of the block has a doorway at the left end and three window bays to the north, with stone-mullioned windows and gables above the upper windows. Two window bays adjoin the east end of the chapel, which has small gables over the upper windows. To the right, there is a wider gabled bay with one two-light window above and below, and to the left, a single light window.

The School House Studies are part of a group of buildings surrounding the greens immediately to the north of the Abbey Church of St Mary, forming a cohesive architectural ensemble with the church and other structures.
