Description

The Private School House at Sherborne School, also known as the Boy's School House, was built in 1860 to the design of R C Carpenter. This two-storey building with an attic features a stone slate roof and rough ashlar walls. The south-facing facade includes six hipped dormers with two lights each. There are stacks with three octagonal stone shafts.

From right to left, the first bay has a two-light mullioned window above and a single light window below. The second bay has two-light windows above and below, while the third bay features three-light windows on both floors. The fourth bay has a two-light window above and a wide gabled porch on the ground floor. The fifth and sixth bays are blank on the first floor, but on the ground floor, there is a large splayed three-sided bay window with an embattled parapet, which was added in 1884.

On the west side, there is a gable at the south end with a splayed bay that rises through the ground and first floors, and a small attic window. North of this gable are two hipped attic dormers, a three-light window on the first floor, and another splayed bay window with an embattled parapet on the ground floor, which was an addition by Benjamin Ingelow between 1899 and 1700.

The Boy's School House is separated from the Private School House by a low wall. At the south end, there is a passageway with a wide pointed moulded arch at the entrance and a two-light stone mullioned window above. To the north, there are ten window bays with hipped dormers featuring three lights. The building has ashlar stacks, three-light windows on the first floor, and on the ground floor, there are two-light windows in the third, fifth, seventh, eighth, and tenth bays, a four-light window in the ninth bay, and a rectangular bay of five lights in the sixth bay, with three-light windows elsewhere. A moulded stringcourse runs above the ground floor.

These buildings of Sherborne School surround the greens immediately to the north of the Abbey Church of St Mary and form a group with each other and with the Abbey Church.
