Description
The Methodist Church, located on Cheap Street, was built in 1841-1842, with galleries and the western end added in 1862 and further extensions in 1884. The east front features hewn stone with a gable in the middle section, flanked by giant buttresses. It has a window with three lancet lights, above which is a blind rose window surrounded by blind lancet panels. The porch has a wide pointed arch and a gable. On either side, there are lower lean-to additions with tall windows that have pointed heads and blind arcading. The return walls leading to the galleries are made of rubble and consist of five window bays. The west extension is constructed of ashlar and has a semi-octagonal apse with tall two-light cinquefoil windows, each with a round quatrefoil and drip moulding above. There are buttresses with offsets at each angle. An external stair against the main body of the church leads down to the undercroft and also rises to an entrance in the northeastern facet of the apse. The church is part of a group that includes Nos 54 and 56, a gate, lamp, and overthrow between Nos 54 and 56, and Nos 58 to 82 (even).
