Description

Abbeylands is a Grade II* listed house located on Cheap Street, at the corner of Abbey Road. The building likely dates from the 16th or early 17th century and is part of the group associated with Sherborne School. The lower storey is constructed of stone, while the upper two storeys are timber-framed with exposed timbers. The structure features one gable and two cock-lofts on the second floor, which include small two-light oak mullioned windows. The roof is covered with stone slates.

On the first floor, there are three moulded timber oriel windows: one with five lights and the others with seven lights. The ground floor has three-light mullioned windows that are either modern or restored, and the building has restored lead glazing throughout. The first floor overhangs and is supported by a stone corbel at the left end. The return wall is made of stone and features stone mullioned windows, one of which has been altered.

The entrance front is also stone, with a gable and a round-headed doorway that has a moulded stone archivolt, imposts, and a keystone. The date 1649 is inscribed in the spandrels. Inside, there is a notable mid-17th century staircase. Additionally, there is a 19th-century bay window facing Abbey Road.

Abbeylands is part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 30 (even) and Nos 34 to 50 (even).
