Description
The Swan Hotel, located on Cheap Street, is a building dating from 1625. It features a late 18th century to early 19th century front with a mid 19th century extension that has three bays, continuing the front to the north of the yard entry. The hotel has a steeply pitched gable end tiled roof with projecting bracketed eaves. The original part of the building is three storeys high, while the mid 19th century extension is two tall storeys. The exterior is painted stone, partly faced with stucco, and includes a stone plinth and rusticated chamfered quoins.
The earlier section has flush framed sash windows: two on the second floor, one single and a pair on the first floor, and one single on the ground floor. There is a yard entry with large flush panelled double doors. The mid 19th century extension features three recessed sashes on the first floor and two tall camber-headed paired sashes, with dividing pilasters and keystones above. A deeply recessed panelled house door with a rectangular fanlight is also present.
At the rear, wings extend on both sides of the yard, which include former service buildings, stables, and coach houses that are two to three storeys tall, with single storey stables made of stone rubble, some with red brick dressings. The section directly adjoining the original house has four dormers, three flush framed sashes on the first floor, later flush architrave framed sashes, and a glazed and panelled door with sidelights on the ground floor, with some glazing bars still intact. Part of the southern wing may date back to the 17th century, and there is a date plaque from 1822 on this wing.
The Swan Hotel is part of a group that includes Nos 29 to 53 (odd) and No 53A.
