Description
The General Post Office, located at 47 Cheap Street, is a mid-19th century building. It has two storeys and features five window bays. The front is made of ham stone, with finely dressed ashlar on the first floor and a rusticated ground floor topped with a cornice. The eaves have a moulded cornice with modillions above a frieze. The first floor has sash windows that are three panes wide, each with moulded architraves, a cornice, a frieze, and sills. The ground floor has wider windows that are also three panes wide. The central doorway is framed by a tall moulded architrave and has a moulded cornice supported by carved trusses, along with a rectangular fanlight and a six-panelled door. This building was originally a private residence. It is part of a group that includes Nos 29 to 53 (odd) and No 53A.
