Description

The Bull Hotel is a building dating from the 17th century, with most external features appearing to be from the 18th century. The street front was completely re-cased in the mid-19th century and is finished in stucco. The hotel has three storeys, with a moulded eaves cornice supported by brackets, a blocking course, moulded strings, and continuous sill bands on the first and second floors. The ground floor is rusticated, and there are moulded panels between the windows on the first floor, along with vermiculated panels between the strings and sill bands. The façade features six ranges of sash windows, two two-storey canted bays, and an elliptical arch leading to the yard entry. The doorway is adorned with Tuscan pilasters and an entablature.

At the rear of the main range, the building is slate-hung and includes one tripartite flush-framed sash window with glazing bars, one attic dormer with casements, and two ventilation grilles for the cellars featuring a vine leaf pattern in cast iron. There are two long extensions at the rear; the eastern one is three storeys high, with the upper two storeys jettied and featuring four ranges of cased flush-framed sashes with glazing bars. Further south, there are additional coursed rubble and brick extensions that culminate in a block with a hipped slate roof, a segment-headed passageway, an external brick stair to the rear with stone treads, and a clock on the front.

The western extension has a lamp mounted on a cast iron bracket at the front. Further south, there are two-storey colour-washed brick stables with a pitched slate roof, featuring four planked stable doors, one planked double door, two planked loft doors, and eight slatted openings for ventilation. The Bull Hotel and the surrounding buildings from numbers 8 to 36 (even) form a group with the United Reformed and Methodist Church.
