Description
Nos 37 and 39 on East Street are 17th century buildings that were refronted in the early 18th century. They are constructed from hammer-dressed stone and feature part timber framing. The buildings have a pitched modern roof and consist of two storeys with attics. Notable architectural details include a dentilled eaves cornice and five ranges of sash windows with glazing bars, complemented by ashlar lintels and projecting key blocks. The central entryway features a six-panel door with a moulded architrave and a lead-covered hood that has a bowed front. There are also two shop windows. The rear of No 39 displays a timber-framed upper storey and a three-light casement window with lead glazing bars. Nos 37 to 47 (odd), the Unitarian Chapel, the Public Library, and Nos 53 to 57 (odd) form a group.
