Description
No. 55, including railings, is a building from 1835 located on East Street. It was originally founded as a Liberal Club by Henry Warburton, MP. The structure is made of colour washed brick and features a stone cornice and a moulded string course. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and has four ranges of sash windows with glazing bars. A continuous balcony with a cast iron balustrade, supported on brackets, runs along the front.
No. 55 has a shop and a bay window added to it. No. 53, adjacent to it, has a panelled door adorned with moulded acanthus ornament and a semi-circular fanlight, also featuring moulded acanthus ornament set in reveals. There are cast iron railings to the area and steps.
This building is part of a group that includes Nos. 37 to 47 (odd), the Unitarian Chapel, the Public Library, and Nos. 53 to 57 (odd).
