Description

The Former Literary and Scientific Institute, located at No. 51 East Street, was originally established as a Mechanics Institute by Henry Warburton MP. In 1855, it was reconstituted as a Literary and Scientific Institute and later served as a public library in the 20th century. The building is constructed from Portland ashlar and features two storeys with a high basement. It has a moulded band, a moulded eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The ground floor is rusticated, and there are four ranges of round-headed sash windows with glazing bars. The first-floor windows have a continuous sill band, moulded voussoirs, and an impost band. A panel inscribed with "Literary and Scientific Institute" is present, along with a panelled door that has contemporary acanthus moulding and a semi-circular fanlight. This door is flanked by Greek Doric columns that support a semi-circular arch. Some railings with spear finials are also present. The building is part of a group that includes Nos 37 to 47 (odd) which is the Unitarian Chapel, and Nos 53 to 57 (odd).
