Description
The Antrobus Arms is a hotel located on Church Street in Amesbury. It dates from the 18th century and early 19th century and features painted and rendered brickwork with a slate roof. The building is two storeys high with cellars and has a main block of five bays that was rebuilt in the early 19th century. The central entrance bay is marked by giant pilasters and includes two Tuscan columns with pilasters in antis, accessed by four steps. The flanking bays have twelve-paned sash windows set in deep reveals with concealed boxes, while the first floor has six-paned single hung sashes. A moulded cornice and parapet conceal hipped roofs, and there are brick stacks.
To the right of the main block is an 18th-century two-bay structure with a tiled roof, featuring twelve-paned sashes and raised key blocks that meet a plat band, along with brick dentilled eaves. There is a 19th-century added oriel window in the right bay. Further to the right, there are three bays from around 1800, also made of painted brickwork, which include two 18th-century windows and a large first-floor oriel window, with a hipped roof. To the left of the main block are former stables, likely from the 18th century and altered around 1880, constructed of painted brick with a tiled roof. This section has an off-centre garage door and five flush dormers with flat lead roofs, also hipped.
Inside, the open porch behind the portico has a flagged stone floor and a moulded coffered ceiling. There is a wide glazed door leading to the stair hall, which features an open well stair with an iron balustrade.
