Description

Thornton House is a Grade II* listed building from the late 18th century. It is a five-storey brick house that stands gable end to the road, featuring a shallow pitched slate roof. The entrance front, facing west, has two three-storey segmental bays with three-light hung sash windows. The central section is slightly recessed and features a semi-circular arched head that reaches to the eaves cornice. The central windows on the second floor have a wide architrave with a segmental head, while the first floor has an architrave with two consoles and a cornice.

The central entrance is marked by two reeded columns and a triangular pediment that is broken over the semi-circular head of the doorway, which has plain reveals and a panelled door. A continuous band connects the cills of the first-floor windows on the west front and the north end. The eaves cornice extends along the building and, with a moulding on the gable, forms a pediment above the north end facing the road. On this road end, there are two windows on each floor, with sash windows set in wide wooden cases that are flush with the wall face and have flat arched heads. The right-hand ground floor window is a bow window, similar in proportions to those on the west front. The property is flanked by two channelled stone gate piers and a brick wall.

Thornton House is part of a group that includes Nos 25, 29 to 31 (odd), Westgate House, The Limes, and Nos 43 to 47 (odd).
