Description
The Parade, located at 72 Cheap Street, is a building dating from 1625. It is likely the original site of the Sherborne Bank for Saving, which was established in 1818. The building features a two-storey stucco front, with the upper storey bowed and supported by four Ionic columns. The first floor includes a Venetian window flanked by Tuscan pilasters that have incised line ornamentation. There is a cast iron balcony that is elliptical in shape, and the building has quoin pilasters with similar incised line ornament. A cornice runs along the top, and the parapet has a balustraded panel in the center. The roof is rounded and covered with slate. A modern plate-glass shop front has been added behind the portico. Inside, there is a long and impressive room on the first floor, which has a bowed end, a coved ceiling, and plasterwork treatment of Ionic columns. This room was recently used as a store. The Parade is part of a group that includes Nos 54 and 56, a gate, lamp, and overthrow between Nos 54 and 56, the Methodist Church, and Nos 58 to 82 (even).
