Description
Lloyd's Bank Ltd, located at 75 Cheap Street, is a mid-19th century building that stands three storeys tall and features five window bays. The building has a moulded eaves cornice and stringcourses. The first and second floors are constructed of finely jointed ashlar with long and short quoins, while the ground floor is rusticated and has a cornice.
On the ground floor, from left to right, there are three windows, a segmental headed doorway with a moulded head and keystone, an entablature, a fanlight, pilasters, and a six-fielded panelled door in a frame. There is another doorway in the fourth bay and a window in the fifth bay. An additional bay has been added to the right end of the building, which contains a house door to the Bank House. This doorway is segmental headed with a moulded head, a plain keystone, panelled spandrels, and rusticated pilasters, along with four-panelled double doors and a segmental fanlight.
In the 19th century, this building housed the Wilts and Dorset Bank, which established a branch in Sherborne in 1835 and merged with Lloyds in 1914. The buildings numbered 73 to 85 (odd) form a group with this property.
